January 11 - Happy Monday

Happy Monday everyone. Julia tried out for the Aquastar swim team last week and made the team. Yay! We weren't sure what to expect but the 'tryout' consisted of a 25 yard free (had to be under a minute) and she had to swim butterfly and breaststroke for about 12 yards each. She was placed in the beginning group and had the misfortune of coming on butterfly day. She hasn't been in the pool since summer and she is out of swim shape, so it was a tough day. The warm up for a 200 free (she's never swam that much straight) and they swam around 1k yards total (I could not have done it). The second practice was freestyle and much easier. She is swimming in a meet mid-February and she's excited. One of her friends from soccer is also swimming so they are excited to be together. Speaking of soccer, Julia is taking a break from soccer this winter/spring although she is playing in a tournament in a few weeks.
The coach needed another player and asked if she was interested...and of course she said yes. Luke is playing soccer this winter/spring and we start mid-next month. I'm signed up to be the coach again and I hope we have another great team.

This past weekend was pretty lazy. We played a lot of boardgames, watched a lot of movies and baked.

Have a great week everyone!

love these two

January 7 - Happy New Year

Happy New Year everyone! 2016-it's going to be a great year, I can feel it already. Let's jump in...

We had a nice New Year's Eve. Our friends came over and we had dinner and then the kids did sparklers in the backyard. We played some board games and celebrated the 'New Year' at 9:30pm (thank you Netflix for allowing us to schedule the countdown whenever we want). We spent the first few days of the new year...ice skating! The kids were adamant that we ice skate over the break so that is what we did.
The ice rink near us closed a year or so again, so we drove to Sugarland (about 50min away).  It was a little crowded and chilly at the ice rink but the kids LOVED it. Julia skated 100% by herself and Luke improved a lot over 2 days.

Otherwise, we spent a lazy weekend at home, watching holiday movies and playing with Christmas toys (or in my case...reading!). I went back to work on Monday (always fun after 2.5 weeks off) and the kids were back to school on Tuesday. Amazingly, they were excited to go back and see their friends (I was anticipating a difficult morning on Tuesday but everything went smoothly).
