"When I grow up, I'm going to have four kids. The first will be a girl and I'm naming her Bella. Two years later I am going to have another girl and name her Ellie. One year after that, I will have two boys. They may or may not be twins, they'll be named Hunter and possibly Joseph. I definitely want a J name for the last one. The girls will each have their own room and the boys will share a room. We're going to have three dogs too. Bella will have the option of a golden retriever, black lab or German Shepherd. Ellie will get two choices, whatever Bella didn't and the boys will get whatever dog is left." - Julia
Luke, completely unprompted the other night (he was not in the room when Julia told me her child plan):
"When I grow up, I want to have four kids. Two boys and two girls. The boys will be named Boomer and Lightening. The girls will be Jay and Essie. We'll probably have some cats and dogs, my wife can name those."
Hahaha! Love these kids.

October 19 - White Group
Aquastar is the year-round swim program in our community (just like Schenectady Swim Club where we grew up). Julia has done Aquastar from approx. Jan-Jun for the last 2 years (I love swimming because not only is it affordable compared to other sports, but we can easily activate and deactivate with no issues). This year both kids are doing swimming in the fall and (probably) the spring. The exciting thing about fall swimming is...swim meets! The Jan-Jun was good because it got Julia ready for summer league, but there was only 1 meet in February. Well, the first Aquastar meet was this past weekend and Julia, along with the 'dream team' all competed (I didn't sign up Luke because this meet didn't have any 25s). They had a goal: Operation Get Out of Red Group." Aquastar is leveled by red (beginner), white (intermediate), aqua and blue. To qualify for white group, athletes need to have 3 50s in less than 50sec in 3 different strokes. Julia had her free time from a meet in Feb. This meet she was signed up for back and fly. She was nervous to swim 50s, especially the fly. It was her first event and she sprinted the first 25 and then kind of puttered out on the way home, but she did great and made it in 46 secs. Go Jules! Backstroke was next and she made that time easily, welcome to white!! Kennedy and Reese also made it!! Great job girls! Kimya missed it by 0.47sec but she had all best times and was super proud of herself. But the best part of the day? Lucy, Julia's teammate from diving came to cheer her on. We love our swim and dive families!
The next meet is in 2 weeks, both Julia and Luke will be competing!
The next meet is in 2 weeks, both Julia and Luke will be competing!

October 16 - Celebrating 7!
My little man is 7. SEVEN!! Wowsa, I can't believe it. We celebrated Luke's birthday on...his actual birthday! We surprised him with breakfast in bed (Starbucks hot chocolate and coffee cake) and then after a quick trip to diving with Julia and Jillian, it was time to get ready for the party. We had a bounce house/slide in the backyard, snowcones, appetizers and a delicious cake...complete with a Stampy Longnose MineCraft (thing? person?) on it. Luke loved it! We had a great turnout. There were several friends from his class at school, his class last year, swim team and neighbors. His favorite surprise was that his teacher, Mrs. McIntyre, stopped by with her daughter, Juliette. Luke was so happy!! Thank you to everyone who helped make his day special.
Jillian has her first snow cone...and loves it
Jillian met a friend at diving on Saturday
earlier last week, I chaperoned a field trip with Luke's class to a theater downtown

October 10 - Walking! Kind Of...
![]() |
watching diving is exhausting |
I've been slacking on the blog for the last week so here is a quick update:
Jules
Julia is a busy little lady! She doesn't have any homework this year...which means they work really hard all during the day with barely any downtime. She made the robotics team (90+ kids applied, 24 made the team) so she stays after 2 days a week to work on her project (she is in a team of 4 and she's a programmer). The competition is in December and all the kids are working hard. She is swimming 3 days a week, diving 2 days a week and does a tumbling class once a week. She's busy, but because she doesn't have any homework, she is still able to play with neighborhood friends after school every day before activities.

Luke doesn't like to give me any details about school but he loves his teacher (especially when she reads stories to the class). His birthday party is this weekend and he's super excited about his party. We invited some of his friends from his class last year and his entire class this year. So far, we have about 8 kids coming. It should be a blast! Luke is also swimming 2-3 days per week and does a ninja class once a week. He LOVES the ninja class and doesn't want to leave the gym afterwards.
Jillian
Jillian continues to be the best baby ever. She sleeps all night, loves the bath and is almost always happy. She had her first fever Friday night and Saturday (which meant she was super snugly) but she was back to her happy self on Sunday. She loves to eat and say "dog!"

3 of my girls! |
My first ever baby is hobbling around slowly. She still wants to eat and go on walks, so I take that as a good sign. She is also right under Jillian's chair when she's eating, so we've been calling her Miss Piggy! Her hearing definitely seems to be going, although JD is confident it's selective. I don't think so. I have come home from grocery shopping and literally unloaded several bags with her asleep in the next room. She doesn't budge or seem to notice I'm there until I go over and kiss her.
Luna
Luna was spayed last Friday and has been rocking 'the cone of shame.' She is my shadow during the day (she actually stays closer to me than Karma, which I didn't think was possible) and she LOVES Jillian. Absolutely loves her. Last Saturday the kids and I went to Tammy's for an Oktoberfest celebration. JD took Luna for a walk and said "find the kids." She literally walked to Tammy's front door. This is impressive considering she has never walked down Tammy's road before!

Marissa & Jillian |
Friday, we were back at the pool for practice. There is a 9 year old girl there named Marissa who has deemed herself Jillian's 'babysitter.' She loves to help me with Jillian while we are there, she is adorable! She is actually very helpful and super sweet. She has a brother that practices at the same time as Julia and Luke.

September 25 - Happy Fall
As soon as September 1st comes...my house turns into fall. Every autumn decoration I have is out and the pumpkin (or apple) candle is burning. Fall officially started last week and you all know what that means....
Yep-it's still hot as Hades over here. That's okay, I know the cooler weather (which means 80 and no humidity) is around the corner. The kids are back in school and are back into a routine.
Which for me means...wake up at 5.45am, walk the dogs, start working, get kids to school, drop Jillian off, work, pick up kids, work, pick up Jillian, and then kid activities. We currently have sport activities Monday through Saturday. Julia and Luke are both swimming Monday, Thursday and Friday, they are both at the cheer gym on Tuesday (she is taking a tumbling class, he is taking a ninja class), while Wednesday and Saturday morning are diving. I have to say I'm not missing fall soccer. Other than diving for an hour on Saturday morning, our weekends are totally free. We haven't had this much time in years. Literally.
JD was in Vancouver last week and I held down the fort. Julia and Luke were amazing helpers with the dogs, walking them BEFORE school every morning and in the late evenings. This was a huge help. We hosted a girl scout sleepover Saturday night and while it was chaotic, the girls had a lot of fun (I'm sure JD was happy he was away on business and didn't have to listen to them screaming hahaha).
Happy Monday everyone!

September 13 - Happy Birthday Jillian!
Jillian Noelle is 1! We started the day by going into her room and singing 'Happy Birthday.' She was a little confused as to why she wasn't getting a bottle (mommy is hard core and cuts off bottles and formula at age 1) but she was happy with yogurt and didn't totally hate the milk in her sippy cup. The kids and I headed to Target and the grocery store to buy party supplies, then we were back home getting party ready. The weather was absolutely gorgeous (mid 80s with zero humidity) so most of the party was outside. JD ordered a beautiful cake while the kids and I also baked cupcakes. We had light appetizers, the kids ran around the backyard and then it was cake time! Jillian ate almost all the cake and then finished it off by...placing the cake plate on her head. She was covered in chocolate crumbs from head to toe. Cutie pie!
Snuggling at Target...oh my heart
Her first time in the car cart, she loved it!

September 8 - August Catch Up
If you've been on Facebook recently, you have probably seen the meme "No one in Houston knows what day it is." That is correct. As Florida braces itself for Irma, we are still reeling from Harvey. The days have all blended together. We had dinner the other night with Jill and Lucy (from diving) and half of the homes in Lucy's neighborhood are still underwater.
So backing up a few weeks...the week Harvey hit also happened to be the first week of school. Luke has Mrs. McIntyre, who is a fantastic teacher!! Amazingly, he knows a lot of the kids in his class. Laurel and Olivia, friends from Montessori School, are also in his class and they sit right next to each other. A little boy who lives around the corner, sits across from him. We haven't had a parent night yet but I think he's going to have a fantastic year. His teacher does have a reputation for giving out a lot of homework so we'll see how he does with that.
Speaking of homework...Julia has 2 teachers again this year. While Luke has a lot of friends in class, she has barely any. I'm not sure how it's possible that in her 5th year at this school, she's never been in class with these kids, but it's reality. Her homeroom teacher is Mrs. Florez, who teaches reading, writing and social studies. Her math and science teacher is Mrs. Solomon. Her friend Jacob had the same pair of teachers last year and he was happy with them. So...back to homework. Before Harvey, we were able to sneak in the 4th grade parent meeting and our teachers want the kids to focus on extracurricular activities as well as time with families.
They point blank told us that 90% of the time, there will be zero homework. Now..if Luke has a lot of homework and Julia has none, I see some issues. We'll figure it out!
In Jillian news, she is now walking with push toys and walking alongside furniture. She loves to pull herself up into a stand and let go and see how long she can stand there unassisted. So cute! We started introducing cow milk and she drinks some of it. She's also now regularly eating breakfast and dinner with us. Love this age!

August 31 - Hurricane Harvey
Houston is currently experiencing the worst flood in US History. Thank you for all of the calls, emails, texts, messages and well wishes-our house is dry and we have power, we are extremely lucky. The last several days have been a whirlwind, here is how it happened for us.
Early Last Week
A tropical storm is heading toward Texas. I honestly don't pay much attention to it, as we are hit with a lot of storms here.
Thursday 8/24
The tropical storm is upgraded to a category 1 hurricane, Harvey. After school, the kids and I head to pick up Jillian and I am surprised to see lines of cars at the gas station. HEB's parking lot (our local grocery store) is 100% full with people waiting for spots (for point of reference, our parking lot as 2-2.5x larger than any Publix lot).
I take the kids and immediately fill up on gas at a different station, luckily there was no wait (they were already out of 89 and 93 octane). We go grocery shopping at Randall's, another store close to us, that is known as the 'expensive store' around here that is never busy. The lot is already 3/4 full, which is unheard of. There is no bottled water in the store but I'm able to find 3 gallons of water in the baby aisle (marketed as 'baby water' but it's just filtered water). I get the last few loafs of bread and buy several boxes of granola bars, crackers and snacks. While we are at the store, the storm is upgraded to a category 2. School is cancelled for Friday in preparation for the storm.
Friday 8/25
The eye of the hurricane is heading towards Corpus Christie with expected landfall late Friday/early Saturday. The meteorologists are worried the storm will stall and Houston will be on the 'dirty side' (right side) of the storm, with flood potential. We have light rain Friday and nothing is out of the ordinary. I receive several calls from people thinking everyone is over-reacting and this storm will be nothing big, we aren't even going to be hit with the eye.
The kids and I go to HEB for a few more things and are shocked to find zero water and zero bread. Hannah and Tammy come over for dinner and we all have fun. JD finds a live broadcast of an Emmy winning storm chaser, Jeff Piotrowski, as he reports live from Corpus. The storm is now a category 4. I'm up until 11ish watching Jeff, JD is up until his broadcast lost a signal. It's raining heavier now.
Saturday 8/26
The green space (aka retention ditch) behind my house is as full as I've ever seen it. It's raining on and off all day and we're thinking "well, that wasn't so bad for us." The area hit by the eye is destroyed. I spend the day doing laundry and I'm chuckling seeing a woman kayaking behind our house in the retention ditch.
Late that evening, the rain starts coming down HARD and FAST. My phone is beeping with flash flood warnings and tornado notices every few minutes. JD is at a neighbors house playing board games and moves his car into their driveway. He eventually makes his way back home, soaking wet.
Sunday 8/27
The rain has not stopped. JD stays up watching the water rise and wakes me up at 4am advising the cul-de-sac is flooded. We have to start moving stuff upstairs in-case water comes into the house. We move financial records, pictures, the computer and baskets of things on the ground. Tammy's house was almost flooded-water came up to her garage and back door. By morning, the rain has slowed down but the streets around us are flooded. The ditch behind my house is so full, there is a secondary river of water that's formed next to it.
Our street and all the streets around us are flooded. People are literally kayaking around our neighborhood. It isn't safe to drive anywhere. Mid-afternoon, the water has started to recede. JD and the kids don their rain-gear and take a walk. Another heavy band of rain hits and they are stranded at Tammy's for several hours, where everyone has to hide in Tammy's half bathroom during another tornado warning. I am glued to the news watching the devastation all of the city. Neighborhoods just a few miles from us are completely underwater. People are on their roofs being rescued by boat. Downtown is underwater. Houston has 2 level 1 trauma centers and one of them is being evacuated. Both major airports are closed.
Monday 8/28-Tuesday 8/29
It is still raining. JD goes to the store on Monday and happens to arrive right when they opened. No perishables are available. He waits in line 30min to buy 3 items.
The store is open only a few hours and closes for the rest of the day. Other stores are open for short hours, with people wrapped around buildings waiting to get in. The water behind our house hasn't gone down but hasn't entered our yard. Our house is dry and we have power. Many of our neighbors aren't so lucky. There is a street of houses near our school that back up to a bayou-they all flooded. The back half of our neighborhood has no power (and still doesn't have power as I'm typing this). Houston has 2 dams that are at risk of breaking-the Army Corps of Engineers releases water to control the dam, flooding areas that were previously dry (it was necessary, otherwise mass destruction would have ensued). Galveston, which was not flooded, flooded on Tuesday.
Wednesday 8/30
Parts of Houston are still underwater, people are still being rescued from flooded homes. Shelters are set up all over the city. The rain has finally subsided. Roads around us are mostly clear. There is no way to drive around the city though, sections of every major highway are closed due to flooding. We know people who evacuated who cannot get back. Airports are still closed. Grocery stores are either open for a few hours (no milk) or not open at all. Tammy and I packed up my car with shelter donations (clothing, toiletries, carseats) for the convention center. The kids and I went to a swim mom's house for "Kids for Harvey" event. The kids put together 250 gift bags that were then donated to a local shelter.
Thursday 8/31
We continue to watch the devastation around Houston. The storm is now hitting Beaumont and Louisiana. Part of I-10 east, between Houston and Beaumont, looks like a lake. Beaumont has been decimated and they have no water already. The kids and I are gathering more stuff around the house for a neighbor's friends who have lost everything. JD's cousin texted me that their good friends in north Houston (with 5 children) have also lost everything and are living in a hotel. We've offered up our home, not sure if they'll come. Nic may also move in with us as well (his home is completely flooded, he's currently stranded in San Antonio). Today, we found out a chemical plant north of Houston has caught fire and a major pipeline from Houston to the east coast, has been shut down. We do not currently have any mail service of any kind. Coast Guard helicopters fly by every 15min or so. I have to give a shout out to AT&T for our internet, I can't believe it's still working. And Verizon should use footage of storm chaser Jeff for his incredible coverage of the hurricane touching down in Corpus, he had service for quite awhile.
Is is the weekend yet? Longest week EVER. #houstonstrong
