Our first family trip to Colorado was 2 years ago and we loved it. I had a family member question why we are willing to drive to Colorado and not upstate NY for vacation. Well, it's pretty simple. Colorado is a 17h drive one-way) and NY is over 26h.
Round trip, that's an extra 18h of driving. I love road trips but that is too far. The last time we drove, we went from Houston to Santa Fe, and then from Santa Fe north into Colorado. This time around, we went north to Oklahoma City, then drove west across Kansas into the mountains. Oklahoma City was a new city for all of us and we stayed downtown (very close to where the bombing happened). Our hotel was from the early 20's and really cool, the kids loved it. After checking in, we walked to the botanical gardens and it was beautiful! I wasn't sure what to expect with Oklahoma but it was lush with green rolling hills and friendly people. Luke and Jillian's favorite thing about the gardens was the water fountain/splash pad. I thought we were going to have to drag Luke out of there. He was having so much fun running around and playing in the water! Eventually, we finally got him out of the water and headed back. After drying off, we ate a delicious pizza dinner, the kids went swimming and then it was time for bed until day 2 of travel.
